Contractor Vehicles

Palm Island Barge Company provides a daily return vehicle ferry service from Lucinda to Palm Island Monday to Friday. (Our timetable is available on this website.) Drivers travel free with the vehicle, and passengers travelling in the vehicles are required to pay the same fare as walk-on ticketed passengers.

Drivers and passengers are able to vacate their vehicles during the journey to and from Palm Island, they are welcome in the upstairs wheelhouse and outdoor seating area where complimentary tea and coffee is available, and softdrink is available for purchase. Please note that on HMV 'Lady Fraser' this facility is not available.

Our Company Policy requires all passengers travelling on the barges to listen to the Safety Brief prior to departure and to conduct themselves in an orderly manner.

Alcohol Restrictions apply on Palm Island. Passengers are only allowed one (1) carton of light beer per ticketed passenger. One carton of light beer is allowed per vehicle, regardless of the number of passengers travelling. Please note that beer must be in cans, not glass stubbies.

Our Landing Barge 'Olympic' has a carrying capacity of 70 Tonnes. The deck dimensions are as follows:-

"LADY FRASER" Specifications 

Our Landing Barge 'Lady Fraser' has a carrying capacity of 100 Tonnes. The deck dimensions are as follows:-

  • Door Opening - 4.95 Metres

  • Door Length - 5.23 Metres

  • Door to Wheelhouse - 26.40 Metres

  • Height of Deck to Wheelhouse - 3.00 Metres

  • Wheelhouse Width - 2.60 Metres

'Olympic' and 'Lady Fraser' are available for charter to contractors who require prime-movers, semi-trailers and all machinery to be shipped to Palm Island. The barges are able to wait for unloading on Palm Island before returning to the mainland if necessary.

Notice to Contractors

Palm Island Barge Company has the flexibility to offer contractors flexible departure and waiting times. This is subject to an hourly Demurrage Rate. For enquiries please contact our office.

Building Materials

Palm Island Barge Company provides a daily barge service from Lucinda to Palm Island Monday to Friday. Building materials can be sourced from Ingham, Cairns and Townsville for shipping to Palm Island.

We have the resources to increase services to Palm Island to facilitate the transhipment of large quantities of building materials including demountable buildings. When required we have the flexibility to operate 24 hours per day scheduling three trips, per barge, in a 24 hour period to Palm Island.

Road Freight Townsville - Ingham

Palm Island Barge Company owns and operates road transport vehicles, which are utilised to transport freight from Townsville to Lucinda.

Palm Island Barge Company has a depot in Townsville at  18-20 Jay Street, Bohle, Qld 4818  which accepts dry goods and general freight deliveries Monday to Friday between 8.00am and 1.00pm.  All freight is shipped the next day to our Palm Island depot.  Pick-ups and delivery is available.

Raw Materials

Palm Island Barge Company is able to supply and deliver the following raw materials to Palm Island:-

  • Bedding Sand

  • Brickies Loam

  • Drainage Rock

  • 10MM Aggregate

  • 20MM Aggregate

 

Chiller/Freezer Goods

In 2007 Palm Island Barge Company (formerly known as Day & Day Shipping) expanded their services to Palm Island to include superior cold chain and dry goods logistical service direct from Townsville to Palm Island.

Cold and frozen goods are to be delivered to Harbourside Coldstores at 304 Boundary Street, South Townsville by 4.00pm Monday to be delivered to Palm Island on Tuesday.

Cold and frozen goods are delivered via our fully accredited fridge/freezer truck (Safe Food Accreditation number 122262-000). Our Quality Management Procedures detailed in our Food Safety Programme have proven that they ensure that each step of the cold chain service is monitored and recorded for quality control which is integral to ensuring that the products are delivered in premium condition.

All cold and frozen goods are maintained in a controlled temperature environment that meet with HACCP Guidelines as follows:-

  • Fruit and vegetables are transported within a temperature range of 0 to +7 degrees celsius.

  • Fresh meat is transported at a temperature of between +1 to +4 degrees celsius.

  • Refrigerated products are transported at a temperature not warmer than + 4 degrees celsius.

  • Frozen products are transported between -18 and -20 degrees celsius.
